Central Office Technician/Network Engineer

General Summary

Installs, maintain, and tests all types of central office facilities, toll, Cisco networking, transport and subscriber carrier systems, wireless systems, fiber to the home systems and associated equipment. Monitors quality of toll, extended area service (EAS), special circuits and other subscriber carrier facilities. Takes trouble reports and clears trouble. Also, may perform engineering functions relative to the design, construction, modification, and maintenance of central office, network, transmission equipment and outside plant.

Essential Job Functions

Maintains digital central office equipment, remote units, carrier system equipment and other associated equipment. Assists in the installation, service, and removal of central office facilities and equipment.
Ensures quality service by monitoring quality of toll, extended area service (EAS), special circuits and other subscriber carrier facilities.
Provides customer service by receiving trouble reports and clearing trouble. Completes appropriate reports and records and forwards information to appropriate departments.
Determines equipment requirements for projects, places equipment orders and tracks inventory to ensure projects remain on schedule.
Monitors progress of projects to ensure project specifications and requirements are met.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of central office equipment. Knowledge of Cisco Networking.
Knowledge of digital switching technology. Knowledge of company products and services. Knowledge of company policies and procedures. Skill in developing project plans.
Skill in analytical thinking and problem solving.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in operating central office switching equipment.
Ability to communicate with co-workers and various business contacts in a professional and courteous manner. Ability to read and interpret documents such as maps, staking sheets, and operating and maintenance instruction manuals.
Ability to pay close attention to detail.
Ability to evaluate, test and repair sophisticated equipment.
Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Education and Experience

Minimum of a 2-year technical degree in the related field, or 3-5 years of experience of related work
